Scholarship Description
British Institute in East Africa (BIEA) graduate attachments program provides recently graduated scholars who have an interest in further studies in Africa, the chance to get research experience and build their networks. The July 2020 to June 2021 British Institute in East Africa (BIEA) graduate attachment scheme will accept up to nine (9) successful candidates.Graduate attachments are for a duration of three (3) months. You will need a good academic qualification, some experience of researching/studying Africa, as well as a clear interest in the development of your own research. You should also be able to show significant initiative and be equally adept at working alone or as part of a larger online team. You should be ready to offer enthusiastic assistance for various research projects and data analysis. Graduate attachés can commence between 15th July, 2020 and 1st January, 2021. The program for this year will come to an end on 31st March, 2021. Please indicate specifically the three-month time period(s) that you will be available for this program in your application.
- Get practical experience of carrying out research by working hand-in-hand a prominent researcher on one, or a number of, innovative archaeological, historical and anthropological projects on eastern Africa;
- Undertake their own research with the assistance of a named mentor usually leading into developing a plan for a Masters or PhD. The attachment scheme will involve the presentation of a paper in the British Institute in East Africa Completion Webinar Series upon few aspects of the research they have conducted during the period at BIEA.
- Helping with the administration of the British Institute in East Africa which includes online reading groups concentrated on key texts in African studies, and online seminars and workshops.
- Also, the British Institute in East Africa will provide free weekly online Swahili classes that graduate attachés can enroll in.
The period of researcher projects change often as a result of budgets and administration, therefore, it cannot be guaranteed. However, a list of researchers who have plans for the coming year is included above. Potential graduate attachés should also go through the British Institute in East Africa Annual Review to find out about other potential projects that will be or are on-going.

- Graduate attachés will be provided with an allowance of 1,000 GBP for the three (3) months of the attachment to assist in the payment for food, research costs and access to the internet. The attachés will have to show the receipts for their costs amounting to their total allowance (little food purchases can be written down every week in a receipt book/ledger).
